Guidance
- Choose plants which have a variety of flower shapes. A variety of flower shapes is key to provide pollination opportunities for as many different pollinators (inc different bee species) as possible.
- Consider choosing a mixture of evergreen plants, perennials (they die back each year but come back) and annuals (a one year show but collect seeds for an encore next year). We will keep sharing photos to give you ideas!
- Avoid planting spiky plants, or plants which can sting, or plants which are toxic or invasive species which the Council may remove i.e. ivy, Japanese knotweed, Himalayan balsam, or giant hogweed
- Let's try not to create trip hazards or problems for pedestrians. Don't plant anything that will grow too large (over 1m) and tie back any plants which are at risk of 'flopping' onto the pavement. No hard surrounds around your base - these can be a trip hazard and the sharp edges harmful if fallen on.
- If you plant herbs, we would not recommend eating them if the tree base is by a busy roadside. They'll smell great though when people pass them and provide a source for other residents to take cuttings from to propagate.
- Native seed varieties we (and Tooting’s pollinators!) recommend: Coltsfoot and violets fot early spring nectar and bredstraws, burnets, speedwell and skullcap/clary
