Travelling Seed Creatures - workshop write-up

Sharing Seed Facilitators, Nikki Hafter and Becky Howarth, ran an online workshop with J4Y Beaver Scout Group this Sunday.

All senses were awoken from the get go as 22 8-year olds explored from their homes the aray of seeds Sharing Seeds had provided them with. They moved their fingers blind around the variety of textures ; peered down toilet roll telecopes to have a closer look, listened to a soundtrack of a forest cacophony and imagined and shared the sounds the seeds would make if they had a voice.

The session them moved to an imagination of how the seeds could travel. The group looked at dandelion, burdock, acorns and himalayan bulsen and guessed how the seeds would travel around Tooting before applying the same logic to the set of seeds in front of them.

With imaginations running, the group then sculptured Seed Creatures to transport the wild flower seed mix Sharing Seeds had provided. The Beavers emptied their soil and clay bags, mixed in the wildflower mix and worked it into shape. 5 minutes of quiet working, asking for support from one another when needed. At the end, a dinasour with seeds for teeth was held up to the camera and also a muddy snowman which spoke seeds, hedgehogs, lions and more. The Sharing Seeds facilitators explained that the Beavers could put the seed creatures at the foot of Tooting's street trees and that a tree which they pass on their way to school may be a good choice. They explained it would make the area look more attractive to people and pollinators.

In the final 5 minutes Sharing Seed Facilitators showed the Beavers how they could also grow mustard cress and chickpea shoots in their own time after the call. After the session, the facilitators shared a video repeating these instructions.

Here are some photos to illustrate the session.
